View Full Version : Motorstadt 2011 Suggestion Thread

As always, I'm sure people saw room for improvement yesterday. It's inherent to a show this size, there's no getting around it. From my perspective though, it went off pretty flawless - the weather, registration, parking, prizes...it all seemed natural.

I guess my one suggestion next year is to have a large sign at the entrance. I'd say about 50% of people missed the entrance, even with pointer cones. Even with me standing on the side of the road, pointing with my finger, people still missed it.

Otherwise, I think everything went really well.

fireworks, huge slip and slide, and free candy, lol
no i think this show seemed to work out pretty well, even comming down the dirt road wasnt that bad, it was really compacted so it wasnt like you were driving with huge dust clouds, the grass made all the cars look great as well as keep it a little cooler, there was lots of places to sit and be in the shade.
i'm sure there will be people who will complain about a lot of things, but it was almost like a mini H2o with everyone just hangin out in the grass havin a good time

My thoughts exactly.

I'm sure there will be people that find fault in it somewhere, but I'm having a hard time finding any.

I personally didn't want to camp the night before, wake up after very little sleep, walk around the show all day without a shower smelling like campfire and sweating Jack Daniels.

The other advantage to the after show camping is people that drank during the show won't have to drive home.

Maybe we'll just offer both next time?

campers would have to get up and be packed up by 7:30am to setup for the show. .. It seems that pre-camping would get in the way for morning setup.

biggest thing I can think of has already been mentioned, and that's signage.. we didn't get around to that.

yeah i honestly don't know that i can think of any improvement besides the signage as i also missed the entrance but that was a non-issue really.... just turn around. lol

the park setting was awesome. i loved the horseshoe shape laying with the shelter in the middle as it made it easy to walk to restrooms/registration, etc. no matter what segment you were at, and there also wasn't any category that was out in no man's land as is typical in parking lot settings.

i also want to say great job on getting through awards and raffles without dragging them out. you guys did a great job. i know this is supposed to be a suggestion for improvement thread, but I thought it was great. i also liked how for most cars awards you said the color and type of car, so it clued in the rest of us who won.

So there. put up a sign. stick a fork in it. :)

Ok. Next year we will have a sign.

Yup...I was one of the ones that missed the entrance too

I saw the park as I was driving by, but didn't really see the cars (because they're in the back of the park & you can't seem them from the road)

So yeah....not a big deal, but a sign or an arrow would've been nice

I thought it was awesome, probably one of the best motorstadts yet.

To play off Nicks compliment of naming the color and type of car for awards, it would be cool if we used the projector to show a picture of the winning car as it's announced. I know, it would be a giant pain in the ass, but it'd be sweet.

I loved the location and I had a great time.

My only thought s for next year . . . we had trouble hearing the announcements in the Mk1/Mk2 area. And the sponsor stands didn't seem to flow well (Thayer was front and center but SEA and Loctite were almost unfindable).

You could have a seperate b3 Passat category... How am I supposed to win anything parked between Ollie and that CC?! :D:

yeah that would be cool to have name tags. some people that really like voicing there positive/negative opinions when the owner is right next to the car might want to look around before talking. not that i care what my car is. just respecting others for what they put there heart and soul into it sharing with there buddies working on it. Blood, sweat, busted knuckles, four letter words, and drinkin beers. Then to have it all shot down from somebody that doesnt know the story of it. I heard a lot of crap blurting around, so i just said the most positive thing about the car. Then were looking at and it would turn there sights around. Thats my rant. So like come over and lets break in the vacuum and car cleaning kit already

If possible keep this venue, it was outstanding! Having been to alot of car shows (most on asphalt) having this Motorstadt on a grassy surface was very welcome. The first Motorstadt I was at was 2004, which was fun, and I have been to almost every one since then, but this has been my favorite. I rolled in with a smile and left with one too!
So, while my suggestion is lame, I hope the venue is the same, or something very similar. Excellent work by all, the Indiana crew really raved about the event this year.

This was my first show so I don't really have much to compare it too. Had a great time, loved the venue and can't wait until next year.

I like the name tag idea cuz i don't know what any of you guys really look like.
And I probably would have missed the entrance too but I followed a sweet rado in.

just my 2 cents.

Amazing show! My only suggestion would be to have forum usernames on the placards that go in the car windows. There are so many cars and people that it would help with vehicle recognition. I would prefer this over name tags.

As a vendor I wouldn't have minded getting a more specific "parking spot" for our booth, or at least a little more direction about which way to face, where the pathways are, etc. Maybe SEA wanted to be down the hill there, but I felt like they set up there because there wasn't much room left for them after everyone else filled in. Being one of the top billing sponsors, they should have had more exposure.

I'm going to suggest that all award winners be asked to drive their car up to the pavilion to accept their trophy and then rev their engines before exiting. That was my favorite part of the awards.

The MKI section being sucked into one kinda was a bummer. I mean I know we didn't have a huge MKI section (maybe what 10 cars?), might be able to split it up maybe if there was enough of each type?

All in all I thought it was awesome. I have been to every Motorstadt and this was by far the best. The first year at VWoA was cool in a way but this place had a great vibe. I liked all the grass and the car locations were all convenient and easy to navigate. I do agree that one speaker or something should have been placed more toward the MKI/MKII area so you could hear announcments but other than that I dont really have any complaints.

I think I said something to Nicole as we were leaving but I dont remember what it was now. I do think that being able to just camp anywhere would be cool instead of having to move away from where the cars where (not a big deal, just a thought).

A sign would have been good. One off of 26 mile and one before the show entrance.

When I first heard it wasn't going to be at the ex-HQ in Auburn Hills, I was a little skeptical. I mean, how can you not have a VW show at VW "HQ?" Boy, was I wrong. WAY better location than HQ for all the reasons already stated.

I like roetershVW's suggestion about screen names on the vehicle cards. I hardly know anyone's real name, so it'd be cool to have the association!

I'll also chime in on the MKI/II area and announcements. Need to have a speaker aimed at that section next year.

To be honest I never really even looked, but if they weren't there, trash cans liberally placed through out the display areas. If they were there, good job!!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, excellent food pricing. $3 for dog, drink, and chips!! Awesome!

This is always a problem. You might have noticed leftover trophies at the end of the awards. Those have to be paid for. The classes are set up to try and avoid that. This is why pre-registration is so important. If we see a trend in pre-reg, we will split the classes up, delete classes, etc..

I think we've got it pretty good guys. 7 years of running the show and we've worked out a ton of kinks. It went really well this year and in a new venue at that. I was really happy with it, happy we could bring the dog too. I know he had a great time meeting new people, new dogs, and just getting to be around us since we had been gone for 2 weeks from him.

Heavy Fluid

I there's enough dogs at the show to hold a Motorstadt Dog Show along with the car show. This is a great venue for cars, people, and dogs! Only suggestion would be to add some speakers aimed towards the Mk 1 area. The rest of the show grounds seemed to be well covered.

I sorted through every recycling bin and all of the returnable $ is being put back into Mive's general fund. Don't worry.

I have to sort through the recycling to separate plastic from metal from paper and glass. I then take it to my local recycling place. In that process, we pull all the returnables and turn them in.

Next year we might try to have separate containers for each type of recyclable item, but in all honesty, the sorting process is very easy and takes less than an hour. I will report on this more later in an official report to members.

Lisa and I were talking after the show about the recycling or lack of..
Against the main building, there was a recycling can and a garbage can.
The can marked "Plastic, paper, metal, death devices, etc NO FOOD" had food in it.
The can next to the recycling can, obviously for food or non-recycle items, was full of plastic, paper, metal and death devices.
It seems like many missed the point of recycling.

This is true, but I think there is less "food" in the recycling than the other way around. We had about 6 FULL bags of recycling to take in. This does not include the returnables. Out of the six bags of recycling we ended up with 1/2 a bag of trash from all of them.

It is a lot more in the other direction, and I don't sort through the garbage. Lots of recyclable stuff goes into the garbage bins. I'm not sure why. Sometimes it is general ignorance. Sometimes it might be blatant anti-eco mentality. Whatever it is, we will work on it more for future shows. I think a lot of it is education. The fact is, 95% of the waste we generate at these shows is completely recyclable. Chilifest is a little different.

I am trying to keep this stuff out of landfills. There is no reason why we need to pile the shit up and then come up with more raw materials to make more. Besides, the recyclable material is becoming more valuable. It costs a business less to buy recycled material than raw material these days so the demand is up. These days, almost anything that isn't food or styrofoam is recyclable.

For some reason this year, I didn't get all the cardboard boxes that the shirts and shwag come in. I think those ended up in the Austrian Society's dumpster. Not pointing any fingers. Tony assured me he tried to communicate that.

I get the stuff that MIVE as a community puts in my hands to take away. I'm not necessarily interested in being the garbage police running around yelling at people about "which bin" or whatever.

A lot of styrofoam/polystyrene is recyclable now. At least it has the #6 recycle logo on the bottom. And food is compostible. That's a lot of work for an event like Motorstadt, but easily done at home.

Back on topic =p
I have a suggestion for a way to truly judge the lowest. As it was quite hard to tell in the grass make all the contestants for that (say the judges pick the cars that they want to see) and make them drive to a level concrete section and do a visual / measure on the car.

I do say bags [as they are neat as hell] are kinda cheating lol, maybe add a rule that you have to be able to move at that height from your spot; Or even had to pull in your spot that low?

I have seen vehicles on bags that can drop frame and literally lift their wheels off the ground about an inch or so. I know what I suggested is kind of a lot of work, I think it would cut down on a bit of the static vs bag arguments.

meijerbrantm
06-19-2010, 12:08 PM
the problem with that, is bags/hydraulics may be cheating in your eyes, but int order to make it sit on the frame, while tucking tire is not simple, raised strut towers and all those shenanigans have to be done... i say bags are not cheating and much more work than a static drop from coilovers... heck, everyone and there mother seems to have coilovers, so once i got to the show i can just slam it down to the ground by readjusting the coilovers... no?

ojeeztutone
06-19-2010, 02:23 PM
^^It is not as if this is some vortex show, not a lot of people had bags anyways. Plus like jonathon said. That shit ain't simple. Plus the truck im pretty sure will drive all the way down. :P

06-19-2010, 02:54 PM
I'm just bummed I missed it. Gotta get on top of my game.

^
the low contest, even though I wasn't there. I think bags/hydros aren't really cheating, but I agree to maybe have a different category. But it would really depend on how many with the set up were there. And instead of grass, a more solid platform you could be on, would be the best solution to measure correctly. Even being on dirt would not be ideal. IMO
