  • 2011 GTI.... $5k for leather?

So I am about to take the plunge and buy a new VW.

I am 90% leaning toward a GTI. So when I price out a 2011, if I want leather, I need to add a $5,200 Autobahn Package? Is this for real???

2010 is starting to seem like a pretty good year to pick from...

You do get just a bit more than just seats in that package.

      - GTI Base – includes: new RCD310 single disc CD player with satellite radio, leather steering wheel (same design as last year, without multifunction buttons)
      - GTI w/ Sunroof – includes all of the above plus: Premium 8 touchscreen radio, leather multifunction steering wheel, power sunroof
      - GTI w/ Sunroof and Navigation – includes all of the above plus: new RNS315 navigation system and bi‐xenon headlights with AFS
      - GTI Autobahn – includes all of the above plus: leather top sport seats with V‐Tex leatherette door inserts, Dynaudio “Lite” and Smart Key keyless entry with push‐start/stop ignition
Other updates include a much improved and welcomed bluetooth system called 9W7 that will erase all the confusion and pain associated with the 9W3/9W2 systems and well as the following:
      - 18‐inch “Detroit” alloy wheels now standard on all trim levels
      - Rear side thorax airbags no longer available
      - Voice‐controlled Bluetooth w/ audio streaming and phonebook download standard (9W7)
      - GTI: new RCD310 single disc CD player with satellite radio
      - GTI w/ Sunroof and Navigation and Autobahn Packages: New RNS315 navigation replaces RNS510 navigation
      - GTI Autobahn: New Smart Key keyless entry with and push‐start/stop ignition

For sure you get more. But why not just allow a leather seat option anymore? It was available w/o adding the entire package in 2010. I had actually planned on trying to load it out anyway, but my hand has been forced.

Sadly, it's a result of the times we are in. The CC has some similar fracacta pricing. Buy the lower level sport for a not so bad entry price. The second you add any options, it becomes evident that the next trim level makes more sense. That next trim level has a starting MSRP that is quite a bit higher.

I guess it's commonplace. I just shop for new cars so infrequently that it always gets me.

Maybe they found that those customers typically upgraded those items already and included it in the package. Also a good way to up-sell by stating to many more options are included too. That or VW is anti mass customization from the factory and wants to stick it to the man (you, us)!

I agree that most people who get leather probably did that full upgrade.

I also agree that I probably would have/will as well. Just hate being forced to do anything (or feeling like it).

Regardless, the sight of the price jump from one level to the next (even though I expected it to be a $30k car) made me flirt w/ a Wrangler today. The new body colored top intrigues me.

I think this whole "all or nothing" packaging is FOS, personally. If I want leather, IMO, I should be able to buy leather. Not get extorted into buying a bunch of other crap I don't want.

                $5K. Feh. See ya.

i like my base model 2010...nothing better than cloth heated seats IMHO. Plus the no moonroof leaves some extra head room...

(mine is base model plus the cold weather package)

Opted for the hole shebang. Autobahn package it is. Couldn't be happier.

Now if only my wife would come home from test driving it!

Of course, one more car in the stable means one has to go. Going to have the 1998 Cabrio listed FS as of next week. Just in time for someone to snag it as a winter project.

Bundling options is a way for the manufacturer to reduce overhead - that being said, if I were buying a new GTI I'd skip the leather and get the plaid seats. :D:

If I ever get a bigger garage or convince myself to sell the Stingray, an old school GTI w/ plaid will be in the cards for sure! For this one, I needed leather.
