  • Project: Low & Slow**She Lives!**

So I picked up my latest project on Friday- a 79 Rabbit, 1.6 na diesel (originally a 1.5 apparently), 4 dr. (I know, I know, stupid 4 door, but I think it works with my plans)

(And yes, this was in the outside/cl section on the forums a couple weeks ago)

The basics as it sits now:

-"patina" is extensive- surface rust and a few small holes in various typical spots, underbody is rough from sitting out in the woods for two years. Once I looked closer after getting it off the trailer, this car was originally a baby blue color and a very thorough painter re-sprayed it. Found 1 run inside drivers door, slight overspray on windshield seal, rear window seal and door jamb stickers.
-1.6 has 10k on a full rebuild but currently has issues- won't know what for sure until I get it out and torn down
-Interior is what you'd expect- par for the course for a 79 diesel rabbit, but everything is there

My tentative plan was pretty simple- clean it up (leave paint and rust), fix motor and re-install, clean up wiring harness, re-upholster the seats in some sort of grandpa style brown plaid, get a sweet air cooled type roof rack, and put it in the weeds... like notched frame, adding metal to the oil pan style-in the weeds. Adding a turbo someday was a thought as well. This will never be a daily driver- I bought it to make it a fun, slammed cruiser...not fast, not pretty. I hate to use the term, but kind of a v-dub style rat rod.

I'm looking for some input from mivers on this though...my dilemma is that I absolutely hate the color. I know it probably works with the direction I want to go, but that pukey tan is just so damn ugly. (The original baby blue would be badass) I see three options: 1) leave it as it is and probably hate it 2) leave the rust, wet sand it down and give it a shot coat of primer, then wait roughly two weeks for the rust to re-appear and still have the patina look. 3) same as option 2 except go back to the original baby blue. I suppose option 4 would be to spend big cash on a ton of patch panels and replacement panels, but the reality is that this isn't a gti...it's a four door diesel that I paid $230 for- gotta keep that in perspective.

So give me your thoughts, I'm curious what you think...although I am a stubborn bastard, so I may stick with my own plan. This project is obviously a low budget type build, but I'm really excited about it- I've owned a MK2 GLI, a bunch of MK3's, a couple MK4's, and a B5.5 passat, but never a MK1- I got it simply because I'd never had one, but also because of the simplicity.

Still a "fetus", can't post pics, but here's the photobucket link with pics of the car:

There is absolutly nothing wrong with a 4door! These things are not growing on trees.
        Nice find, go to it!

Nice! What about shooting the car with the original color and putting a flat clear over it? I would shave the bumpers and slam it! I still am planning on visiting this Saturday unless something major comes up. Great buy!

If you left the color the project could be called - Rabbit Turd.

I like the idea of original color and a matte clear...a lot actually...rust coming through that look would be fine. And bumper shaving is definitely in order.

I will be home Saturday and hopefully working on the car after 10 or 11am- I have a landscape appointment in Auburn Hills at 8

                Looks like a good candidate.
Throw up some more pics of the Chevy too if you get a chance. I have a black '91 GMC, on Belltech pieces, awaiting an engine swap.

Gutted the interior , put it up on blocks and pulled the rear bumper after work. I'm thinking about cutting out the spare tire well and welding in a flat floor since it is visible from the rear view...and I see no need for it in terms of what I'm doing to the car...plus it's rusted out.

                  Couple new pics...http://s982.photobucket.com/albums/a...9/79%20rabbit/

I made a photobucket album for the truck, finky...

                  .it's at http://s982.photobucket.com/albums/a...chevy%20C1500/

It's actually an old landscape truck...odo quit in '94 at 94k...best guess is I bought in 02 with about 300k. Frame and body are straight as an arrow (just fender/cab corner/rocker rust in the last couple years) It was originally a 305 truck, the motor now is a mildly built .030" over 350 (355)...mild cam, holley 670 cfm throttle body, performer intake, roller rockers, shorty headers, 3" single flowmaster 40 series exhaust exits pre-axle. She's lowered 4" all the way around...2" spindles + 2" springs up front, shackles and hangers in the back holding 3/4 ton springs. I like a truck to have rake to the front, so I love the stance. Plus I still haul with it, so I need squat space in the rear. Got any pics of yours?

True, so I guess I half gutted it I guess? I think the dash would take twice as long to remove as everything else combined did...I'm amazed and thrilled with the simplicity of this car

the dash comes out easy too trust me ;) its getting it back in that i haven't managed to do yet. Don't wanna get a pretty dash in and have the leaky top ruin it.

Looks good. Any pics I have of mine are the paper type. I have not driven the truck in a few years since I broke something in the bottom end. I have a replacement engine in the garage. With gas prices spiking and having kids it has been put on the back burner. Mine looks just like yours... black, 95 grill shell, badgeless, spindles and hangers (I went 2"f 2"b until I do a C notch kit and put on rest of the rear kit), ex. cab short box though.
I shaved the bumper and welded in light pockets for fogs. Rust also has owned mine since I let it sit. Cab corners have gone from spots to nonexistent.

Pulled the motor and trans out of the rabbit tonight- still sitting on the cherry picker, hopefully tomorrow I'll have time after work to split the trans off and get the engine on a stand.

I may have come up with a name too..."Project low & slow"

Well, having only removed pan and valve cover, the motor looks amazing so far. I was expecting a spun rod bearing based on po's description, but rods seem fine, motor spins with a bar on the crank, valves all move, zero metal in the pan and everything is very clean...looks like it was rebuilt 10k ago just like po said. I guess I need to pull the head tomorrow and see what's up.

For any 1.6 diesel gurus...what might cause a loud clunk and a stall at freeway speeds, then upon restart it clattered and sounded bad?
