  • Mk1 heater hose replacement tricks?

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for replacing the heater hoses on a Mk1 Rabbit? Once freed from the core, should they just come back out easily through the firewall grommet (as easily as a very old hose can), or is my ignorant person missing a step?

Should not be a problem. If you've pulled the dash and the heaterbox apart, this is the easy part.

Actually just changing the hoses out. Have them unclamped and loose from the core, but they don't seem to want to come back through the firewall. I'm thinking I'll just cut them so I can compress them a bit and pull them through.

wipe the grommet with pb, it might be old and solid.

Petroleum jelly will also work, just a LITTLE bit.

Both do good on old rubber

I'll give it a shot. Replacing all the hoses and dealing with rusted busted clamps makes me think I want a Ghia instead of a Scirocco....
