  • $1.50 per Gallon Synthetic Fuel?

"UK-based Cella Energy has developed a synthetic fuel that could lead to US$1.50 per gallon gasoline. Apart from promising a future transportation fuel with a stable price regardless of oil prices, the fuel is hydrogen based and produces no carbon emissions when burned. The technology is based on complex hydrides, and has been developed over a four year top secret program at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. Early indications are that the fuel can be used in existing internal combustion engined vehicles without engine modification.
According to Stephen Voller CEO at Cella Energy, the technology was developed using advanced materials science, taking high energy materials and encapsulating them using a nanostructuring technique called coaxial electrospraying.
“We have developed new micro-beads that can be used in an existing gasoline or petrol vehicle to replace oil-based fuels,” said Voller. “Early indications are that the micro-beads can be used in existing vehicles without engine modification.”
“The materials are hydrogen-based, and so when used produce no carbon emissions at the point of use, in a similar way to electric vehicles”, said Voller.
The technology has been developed over a four-year top secret programme at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, UK.
The development team is led by Professor Stephen Bennington in collaboration with scientists from University College London and Oxford University.
Professor Bennington, Chief Scientific Officer at Cella Energy said, “our technology is based on materials called complex hydrides that contain hydrogen. When encapsulated using our unique patented process, they are safer to handle than regular gasoline.”

Wouldn't this be fantastic? My worry would just be that the fickle American buying public would quickly revert to demanding 6000# trucks and suv's as DD's....

Yea, one thing that really impresses me about the tank is it has the cannon, I mean we can't take the kids but that's even better reason to go on dates. Just imagine how impressed the neighbors will be when we pull that tank in for the first time.

I've been saying for years, why doesn't someone look into coaxial electrospraying?

Yeah, this will make the H2 look like a gd civic. I can't wait to drop the kids off at school in it.

I'm so sick of that facking radio commercial. Every facking morning. Never fails.

I'm ready for some cheap hydrogen based fuels!

Whats wrong with 6000lb trucks as daily drivers?!

I do like the idea of biofuel. I run biodiesel whenever I can in my truck.

Yeah, the diesel changes it up a little for you. ;) I feel like such an environment destroyer in the winter when I'm cruising around in the HD, grossing out at 18,000 and getting 3mpg.

I just tell myself that riding a motorcycle that gets ~40mpg in the summer makes up for my 18-20 in the winter.

On a related note we just built a custom ethanol plant for a venture capitalist. It is pretty impressive. We take waste rice syrup and make 80 proof alcohol!

I'd love to see something like that happen, but I don't think it's reality.

                          1) I don't see how all that technology and R&D can come in so cheaply. Anything "nano" is high dollar signs in people's eyes. Leading to...

                          2) As soon as any corporation gets their hands on it, and you know they eventually will, there's no way they'll sell this stuff for $1.50/gal when the driving public is used to paying twice the price for fuel. Corporations are greedy to a fault, and I have no faith in them selling for a "reasonable" profit.

If voting could really change things, the government would likely make it illegal.

I call BS. The problem is its hydrogen based. And where does hydrogen come from? Oil (and maybe electrolysis, but that's even more expensive).

Also, electrospraying nano particles sounds fancy but actually isn't. It's just spraying something through a small electrically charged nozzle to form very small charged particles. Kind of like how they paint cars now days.

I'd like to see an actual paper before I believe the claims.

EDIT: They aren't selling some new fuel source. The fuel is hydrogen. They've just come up with some smart new way to store it in a space efficient manner. 10:1 they're using some sort of carbon nano-tubes. I can recall reading a couple papers for my chemistry seminar class that made claims saying that nanotubes could store hydrogen at something like 5-10x times the density of liquid hydrogen. Maybe its finally coming to market.

Won't sound so wonderful when it comes out that you get 3mpg when burning the stuff.
